Health's Up: An ideastream Podcast
When it comes to health, it isn’t always easy for kids and families to navigate the facts. That’s why we created “Health’s Up,” a new podcast that explores healthy choices through kids’ voices. The show is hosted by pediatric nurse practitioner Kristi Westphaln.
We visited Marion-Sterling Elementary School in Cleveland and asked fifth graders in Mrs. Simpson's class what health topics they were most interested in learning about. The topics they picked were breathing, sleeping, eating and exercise.
In the breathing episode, we cover asthma, a chronic illness that affects a lot of kids in Northeast Ohio. We also learn about a new threat to children's health: vaping.
In the episode about sleeping, we tackle challenges to getting shut-eye, such as cell phones and caffeine. We also learn the importance of developing a healthy sleep routine every night.
In the eating episode, we learn tips about nutrition and healthy eating habits. We get advice on grocery shopping and cooking with your family. And, we learn a healthy, easy and delicious recipe from the kids in Mrs. Simpson's class.
Finally, in our episode about exercise, we talk about ways to stay active, including some that might already be a part of your daily routine. Plus, the fifth graders at Marion Sterling challenge their gym teacher to a physical activity challenge.
Each episode includes helpful information from pediatric health experts in Northeast Ohio, and comes with resources for teachers and families to use.
