WCLV Program Guide 05-13-2020

Almanac

May 13

1833 first performance of Felix Mendelssohn's Symphony No. 4 ‘Italian’ at a London Philharmonic Society concert conducted by the composer.

1842 Sir Arthur Sullivan – English composer (d.1900); best known for his  14 operatic collaborations with dramatist W. S. Gilbert, including H.M.S. Pinafore, The Pirates of Penzance and The Mikado; he composed 23 operas, 13 major orchestral works, and much more including Onward Christian Soldiers and The Lost Chord.

1868 first performance of the Saint-Saëns Piano Concerto No. 2 in Paris, conducted by Anton Rubinstein, with the composer as soloist; the work had been written in three weeks, and there was very little time to prepare for the premiere; the piece was not initially successful, but now it is Saint-Saëns’s most popular concerto

1913 William Schwann – American organist and record retailer (d.1998); in 1949, began publication of the Schwann Record Catalog; as Anthony Tommasini observed in his New York Times obit for Mr. Schwann, “[his] name has become as synonymous with record collecting as the name of Baedeker is to travel and Bartlett is to quotations.”

1949 Jane Glover – English conductor and music scholar (71 years old); since 2002, she has been Music Director of the Chicago ensemble Music of the Baroque.
